They play for the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision as well as the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference and represent Florida State University (or more commonly known as FSU).
The team’s history earned it several distinctions including three national championships, eighteen conference titles, and six division titles. The Seminoles have earned three undefeated seasons and ranked in the top four of the AP Poll for 14 years straight from 1987 to 2000, and have completed an excellent 41 straight winning seasons from 1977 to 2017, including a 29 game victory streak from 2012 to 2014 making them tied for twelfth-longest winning streak in college football. ESPN has even given the team votes as one of its top teams in college football history.
The team has also produced some of the best players including three Heisman trophy winners from 1993 to 2013. The university hall of Famer Fred Biletnikoff has also had his name attached to the Biletnikoff award to the top receiver in college football. The Seminoles don’t just represent their university. They represent the very best in college football in a distinctive and sharp uniform that fans are always excited to see.
Traditions Make the Team
If you have never been to a Seminoles home game, then you may not know what to expect. Here’s a quick guide on what happens before and during Seminoles home games to welcome the team back home. Whether you’re a member of The Tribe or if you just want to play along, read on!
The Seminole Tribe of Florida officially sanctions the use of Osceola and Renegade as official symbols of the program. During home games, Osceola, portraying the Seminole leader Osceola, charges down Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium, riding an Appaloosa horse named Renegade. He throws a burning spear at midfield to begin every game. Fans of the team are also known as “The Tribe” to honor the Tribe that gave the team their namesake. During all home games, many away games, and every championship or bowl appearance, attendants to Seminoles games will get to experience The Marching Chiefs. This 470 member-strong band holds the distinction of being the world’s largest collegiate marching band.
The Seminoles are also known for the fight song and war chant that have become a huge part of the Seminoles viewing experience. Their fight song, that started as a poem by Doug Alley, was transformed into a play after Professor of music Thomas Wright saw the poem and wrote a melody to it. During the 1950 homecoming halftime show, The Marching Chiefs premiered the song during that year’s ceremony naming dedication. The War Chant began to use in 1984 against Auburn and was started by the percussion section of the Marching Chiefs. The melody of the chant was based on 1960s cheer, massacre, and has become associated with the tomahawk chop gesture.
Finally, if you are lucky enough to arrive early enough to the campus, you might be able to watch or take part in the Legacy Walk. Before every home game, fans line a route from Heritage Tower Fountain near Chieftain Way to the stadium so that the fans can welcome the team back home before the game.
Coming to see the Seminoles isn’t just a chance to see incredible football action. It’s a chance to enjoy an experience, so make sure you don’t miss out.
Predictions for 2019 and How They shaped Up
247 Sports predicted that the Seminoles would go undefeated until their game against Clemson on October 12. Clemson had a fantastic season last year that led to the team being crowned as that year’s champions. The website believed at the start of the year that the Seminoles didn’t have what it takes to stand up against the powerful Tigers. But now, as we near that game, the Seminoles are looking at a 3-2 record.
The question is, will the Tigers steamroll the team as 247 Sports predicts or will the Seminoles meet the 77% odds that ESPN’s FPI set for the team at the season start? Whatever happens, the Seminoles will be returning home in two games time and it will be exciting to see how many wins they can get under their belt for fans to cheer on.
